Living for Health not Ego

Hello my name is Allstar, HR professional and business student.

One of my passions is the study of human dynamics and relationships in the workplace.

In this series "Live for your health! not your ego" we will delve into what it means to live for your health and not your ego/pride, how to improve your health through small daily activities, and how to get what you need out of life while optimising the relationships you have with others, (i.e.   your partner, friends, colleagues and competitors.)

Before we discuss these areas lets first talk about how you start your day in the morning.
Now not everyone is a morning person but there are small things we can do to start our day off, that will make a positive difference to the day.

When you first get out of bed don't jump out of bed the first moment you wake up.
If you consistently "jump" out of bed when you wake up, you will be doing your heart and head no good.
Jumping out of bed can cause  orthostatic hypotension a feeling of dizziness that makes you feel light headed.
When you lie down or stand up our blood vessels respond to gravity by narrowing to prevent our blood pressure falling. This ensures a steady supply of oxygenated blood to the brain.

The side effects that come from this can be heart palpitations, anxiety and depression.

According to Dr. Campbell in a Wall street journal article on foot health
"Jumping straight out of bed in the morning when the muscles are cold can harm the fascial band and cause plantar fasciitis, a very common and painful inflammation of the bottom of the foot.

A routine stretch that wakes up the muscles in the feet should be done in the morning before getting out of bed, Dr. Campbell says.
Sit with legs straight out in front of you and angle your toes toward your head and then away from it. This works the Achilles tendon and the fascial band, which connects the front and back of the foot.

Therefore it is better to wake up slowly and gradually.

Alarm clocks are very useful, think of a time in the morning that will give you plenty of time to get ready and then add five minutes.

For example if 6:30 am is the time that you want to wake up, set your alarm for 6:25 am.
This way you can wake up slowly, giving your body time to prepare to get up at 6:30 am without doing too much damage to your nervous system or heart.

If you have a bedroom of your own, fill it with motivational, positive posters.

Making your own posters filled with encouraging words is even better, because it is reminder that you took the time out to love on yourself so you could start each day on a positive note.

Create a poster that says a commitment to Love.

Make a commit to love yourself and  don't forget to commit your day to loving others and the world you live in, this world isn't perfect and neither are the people, but we can do our part to make the world we live in shine.

Consider the example of people like Nelson Mandela and Mother Teresa, people that will forever be remembered for bringing warmth and hope to our world, this we should all strive towards.

Read aloud to yourself every morning a dedication to love.

For those unsure what to write, your dedication statement could go something like this.

"Good morning (insert your name)  love is universal, Today I choose to love myself  and love others this way it will go well with me , I will give love to this world and will find love in return, love is what I was born for, love will go on forever".

In this statement I have addressed the four relationships we need to recognise in our human existence.

1. love is universal - each person has a relationship to spirituality whether or not it is acknowledged.
some people will call it their relationship to God while others call it their connection to the Universe.
However you do it,  acknowledge your love for this relationship and you will find peace.

2. Love myself - as a human we have a relationship to our self, when we don't eat or sleep properly we damage our health and our ability to succeed in life.

"When no one is around and I need a hug I just hug myself ". #Don't judge it's comforting
(Robert Downey Junior hugging himself)

In this relationship we have with our self, we must remember staying committed to giving our body enough exercise, sleep, healthy eating, quiet alone time and most importantly positive self talk.
Positive self talk is important if you want achieve things in life.

Try writing a diary for a day where you write down all the positive and negative things you think about yourself, you may be surprised by the number of mean things you say to yourself.

By keeping a diary of the thoughts you direct at yourself you can eliminate negative self thoughts that are holding you back from living life to the full.

3. Love others - As humans we are social beings we can not live in a cacoon devoid of any help outside of ourselves.

Many times throughout history people have wanted to learn how infants learn language, if a baby  heard no spoken word from parentals would they speak an earlier language or would they speak the language that Adam and Eve spoke?

So people conducted an experiment called "the forbidden experiment".
American literary scholar Roger Shattuck called this kind of research study forbidden because of the exceptional deprivation of ordinary human contact it requires.

These infants would have all of their functional needs met but not a word uttered in their presence.

The results surprised most, in most cases the infants didn't make any kind of language, they were mute, or due to lack of social interaction fell into psychosis or passed away.

Why did this happen when all the babies physical needs were met?

The babies died due to a lack of affection, in order to survive and grow they need the touch and sound of parental figures.
Without this emotional bond a baby can not survive even the first six months, thus humans need more than just water, food and shelter... we need to belong.

4. Love to our world - We all have a relationship to the world we live in, we must show respect and care to the creation we have been given dominion over.

As humans we are at the top of the food chain, this means we have a responsibility to look after all animals, the creatures of the field, the birds of the air and fish of the sea.

This responsibility extends to the natural environment, if we treat our environment with love it will continue to provide for us.

The people of Israel were instructed by God to give their farming land a rest every seventh year.
This ensured that the land wasn't over farmed.

When you over farm a field you lose top soil needed to grow plants causing the ground to become dry and tough.

Here we can see the example of giving love to the world and receiving love in return, if the Israelites live by this principle their land would continue to provide crops for them.

In my dedication statement I also addressed another important concept to our reality
"Love goes on forever".

Love surpasses generations, civilizations and regimes.

Even today love stories like Romeo and Juliet, Paris of Troy and Helen of Greece, Jack and Rose from the Titanic, surpass time and culture.

Although these love stories were created a long time ago they still resonate with audiences today.
You only have one life but  love will carry on.

Ok so back to starting your day the right way,  you have woken up, got out of bed slowly instead of jumping out of bed, your motivational posters in your room give you encouragement,  and you have spoken aloud your commitment to love.

What comes next?
you must make yourself fresh! Wash your face, brush your teeth, your hair, have a shower, whatever it is, make sure you are starting the day afresh.
Today is a new day the old is gone.

Once you are fresh and dressed, find a mirror and look yourself in the eye and say three times quickly
"I am successful, powerful, handsome, happy".
Does this line sound familiar?
This line comes from the movie Evan Almighty, in which Evan Baxter starts each morning reaffirming himself.

Although it seems silly if not a bit comical because of Steve Carrel, it truly makes a difference when you speak aloud encouragement over yourself.

Once you are ready and dressed for success, write yourself a to do list in a book that fits inside your pocket.
If you put a to do list on your phone you may forget or run out of battery.

Write a top ten list of things you want to achieve today.

All successful people use a to do list, the difference is in remembering to write a to do list everyday.

The point of the list is not in doing all things on the list, therefore you should not burden yourself if you don't achieve everything on the list.

If you write a to do list everyday you will get more done than if you don't write one.

I learnt this valuable lesson from the book "University of success".

This book is what some may classify as a self help book, but it is actually a collection of classic self help lessons in one book.

This book changed my life and it will change yours.

So we have prepared ourself for the day ahead, armed with a to do list, dressed and ready for success with a commitment to love, self confidence and self esteem from talking in the mirror and self hugs.

As you step outside the door and  are traveling on the way to your destination....

"say a little prayer for you"

Research shows that saying a prayer for your romantic partner can increase commitment and satisfaction towards them.

Prayer is a type of alternative Medicine.
Barnes in 2002 found that 62 percent of Americans use alternative Medicine.

Of the top ten most popular alternative treatments in the U.S , Prayer for self at 43 percent and Prayer for others 24.4 percent were the two most named alternative treatments.

The majority of people in the U.S that use alternative medicine are young adults to middle aged, educated and higher than average income earners, who are not so much disappointed with conventional Medicine but prefer to try alternative Medicine for other reasons towards their beliefs and philosophy.

There is even evidence outside of the U.S that indicates that Prayer is the most commonly used health intervention. (Edman and Koon; Samana et al 2004)

Therefore "I sing a little prayer for you" is more than just a feel good song it actually works!
This here is the song being sung by Rupert Everett in the movie "My best friend's wedding" you can sense the difference a little prayer can make.

Go forth and try these tools for starting the day and you will see a difference, I leave you with a quote
by Robert Brault "Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things".
